  • Apollo 12 mission

Apollo 12 mission was the sixth manned flight in the United States Apollo program and the second to land on the Moon . The Apollo 12 launch was on November 14, 1969, from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, four months after Apollo 11. The crew was Mission commander Charles "Pete" Conrad and Lunar Module Pilot Alan L. Bean who performed just over one day and seven hours of lunar surface activity while Command Module Pilot Richard F. Gordon remained in lunar orbit. The landing site for the mission was located in the southeastern portion of the Ocean of Storms.

  • Apollo 12 side story

Unlike the first landing on Apollo 11, Pete Conrad and Alan Bean achieved a precise landing at their expected location, the site of the Surveyor 3 unmanned probe, which had landed on April 20, 1967. They carried the first color television camera to the lunar surface on an Apollo flight, but transmission was lost after Bean accidentally destroyed the camera by pointing it at the Sun. On one of two moonwalks, they visited the Surveyor and removed some parts for return to Earth. The mission ended on November 24 with a successful splashdown.

US$ 1000 APOLLO 12 LUNAR SURFACE PANORAMIC VIEW AT THE SURVEYOR 3 SPACECRAFT PROVIDES A PROSPECTIVE OF SURVEYOR 3'S VIEW OF THE MOON Large black and white photograph, 20 x 24 inches. Captions along the lower border reads in part: "Prepared by Mapping Sciences Laboratory, Science & Applications Directorate, Manned Spacecraft Center, January 1970." Large photographs of this type were created just after the flight to assist with post mission analysis. During Conrad and Bean's second lunar surface moon walk, they photographed, inspected, and returned parts from the Surveyor 3 spacecraft located some 600 feet from their Lunar Module. The astronauts completed a partial Hasselblad panoramic (pan) photography of the area which has Surveyor 3's TV camera and extendable sample collection arm at the left and center. The lunar horizon can be seen along the top and numerous small craters at the pan center and to the right. Surveyor 3 landed some 31 months before the flight of Apollo 12 during November 1969. Parts returned by Conrad and Bean assisted understanding of long term exposure of flight equipment on the lunar surface.

Running through interior of beta cloth strap is a secondary brown web nylon strap, middle of strap looped around bar end of metal ratchet buckle. One end of strap attached to metal hook the other end attached to metal clasp marked with "SV723617-1 S/N 281." With an Autograph Letter Signed by ALAN BEAN on his personal illustrated letterhead. ALAN BEAN's handwritten provenance letter reads: "I hereby certify that this waist strap held the lower right end of my Portable Life Support System backpack to my suit, as I walked and ran and worked on the Ocean of Storms during my two moonwalks on the Apollo 12 mission. This was a critical component because it held the PLSS snug against my space suit so there would be no unnecessary strain on the hoses or suit hose connectors during my moonwalks." Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean used this Apollo Portable Life Support System (PLSS) strap on the lunar surface during Extra Vehicular Activities while exploring the Ocean of Storms for seven hours and forty-five minutes during the Apollo 12 mission. It secured the life support system carried on his back including the regulating of suit pressure, oxygen, carbon dioxide removal, humidity, odor and other contaminants, cooling and recirculating water, sensing and reporting suit parameters, and providing communications for the suit's wearer. Rather than a looped strap which could easily slip off, each strap ended with a latching clip. Shoulder straps were connected to a ring assembly on the upper chest of the suit, whereas the lower straps, such as the present example, which were used for maintaining lateral stability of the PLSS, were connected to rings just above each hip. The length of each strap could be adjusted to ensure optimum fit. Reference: See Apollo Stowage List Mission AS-507 CM 108/LM-6. Apollo 12. November 18, 1969. Houston, Texas: Manned Spacecraft Center, 1969. While the stowage list does not list part numbers for the individual pieces of the PLSS sub-components, the sub-components that are listed all have part numbers that begin with "SV72."
US$ 1,500 - AGREEMENT ON THE RESCUE OF ASTRONAUTS CARRIED ON THE APOLLO 12 COMMAND MODULE BY ALAN BEAN FLOWN printed document, "Agreement on the Rescue of Astronauts, the Return of Astronauts and the Return of Objects Launched into Outer Space," on vellum paper, 5.5 x 3.5 inches, comprising 10 articles and signed in facsimile by Dean Rusk, Patrick Dean and Anatoly Dobrynin for the US, UK and USSR. With an Autograph Letter Signed by ALAN BEAN on his personal illustrated letterhead. SIGNED by ALAN BEAN. ALAN BEAN's handwritten provenance letter reads: "I hereby certify that the accompanying copy of the 'Agreement on the Rescue of Astronauts' travelled to the Moon with me in our command module, Yankee Clipper, in November 1969, during the Apollo 12 mission. The copy of this important document has been in my personal collection since my return to earth." The Rescue Agreement was created by United Nations General Assembly Resolution No. 2345, coming into force on December 3, 1968. The agreement expanded on the rescue provisions in Article V of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty and required all signatories that became aware that the personnel of a spacecraft are in distress to notify the launching authority and the Secretary General of the United Nations. Additionally, the Agreement mandated that every state party to the agreement must provide all possible assistance to rescue the personnel of a spacecraft who have landed within that state's territory due to accident, distress, emergency, or unintended landing and to lend assistance beyond its territory where possible and necessary. This treaty is still in effect today and is one of the few copies of an international treaty to be flown to the moon. The Apollo 12 astronauts would have carried a copy in their Personal Preference Kit to be shown to local authorities should they land outside of US jurisdiction.
US$ 2,500 FLOWN—APOLLO 12 SCHEMATIC 5 Water. Water and Waste Management. CSM 108 Thru 111. Size E. DWG No 4.5. Houston, Texas: National Aeronautics and Manned Spacecraft Center, 1969. 27.5 x 10.5 inch 4-Fold Schematic from the Apollo 12 CSM Systems Data Checklist, detailing the Water and Waste Management System. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED: "Flown to the Moon on APOLLO 12 / RICHARD GORDON CMP." Water and waste management in a zero-gravity environment were just two of the many engineering problems that needed to be addressed as part of the Apollo project to land the first men on the Moon. The function of the waste management system was to control the disposition of solid and liquid wastes and waste stowage gases, a task which it performed satisfactorily from a technical standpoint. Unfortunately, the significantly higher degree of skill needed to manipulate the equipment than would be the case on Earth led to many complaints from the APOLLO astronauts in the wake of some inevitable human errors. An important piece of space and engineering history.
